The BFI uses National Lottery funds to develop and support original UK filmmakers and films and contributes to the film industry as they seek to reflect the public in the films they support, the audiences who watch them, and the filmmakers, actors and crews who make them.

Production

1) What difficulties did the film run into during production?
Almost all the filming locations were external locations (outdoors) and so they fell victim to the rain which causes problems with things like lighting (etc).

2) How many days did the film take to shoot?
19 days were spent filming, however one days worth of filming had to be scrapped and wast used as the footage was poor due to weather conditions, so it could be argued that it only took 18 days.

3) What scenes were particularly difficult for Joe Stephenson to film?
'There’s a scene towards the end of the film in which there’s a confrontation, it’s high energy and a lot of the issues hinted at throughout the film are coming to a head. The most challenging thing with this scene was the tight space of the caravan versus the blocking of the action and space for the camera to actually fit in and capture the brilliant work the actors were doing.'

1) Why did the film fail to secure a distribution deal when first made in 2014?

3) Why are film festivals an effective way for a low-budget film to secure a distribution deal?
It helps them gain recognition and opens them up to a wider audience. This can also lead to more, well known icons reviewing the film, making the film more well-known and its ratings may increase as a result of this.

2016

5) Why do you think film subscription service MUBI chose the film to feature on the service?
It was originally created because its founder was unable to watch a particular movie through any other film subscription service so i think they recognised that Chicken was a film that had the same problem so they decided to feature it on their service so people who wanted to watch it could easily have access to it.

6) Why was Film4 a good choice to give the film its UK television premiere?
It is a well-known channel and is accessible to almost anyone that shows arthouse fims as well as Hollywood/Blockbuster movies.

7) When will the film be released on iTunes and other video-on-demand services in the USA and Canada?
January 2018. Stephenson is also looking to secure a deal with either Netflix or Amazon prime to find a wider audience.

Promotion

1) What does the trailer suggest regarding genre and the potential audience pleasures of Chicken?
The trailer suggests the film is based around the life of the main character and would have elements of drama that builds through the duration of the film. It also alludes to the idea that there will be some emotional twists that grip the consumer into the narrative.

2) What synergy can you find between the trailer and other traditional marketing methods such as the film poster?

The fact that he is a well-known film critic who has 1)watched Chicken and 2)has such good reviews about it makes consumers want to watch it themselves. This is important for the success of the film as it helps them gain more viewers and bring in revenue.

It shows other peoples recommendations of the movie and offers their thoughts and opinions. It also notifies consumers of updates, such as the film being released on new platforms.

Celebrities, companies such as Variety magazine, cast members (etc). This helps promote the film as it attracts attention to more people and followers of other popular icons may become more interested in watching it.

It uses images and videos to give audiences a sneak peak into what the film is about and allows them to get a general idea of what the storyline is based around. It also helps intrigue the audience as the teasers make them more inclined to watch the film to find out what its about.

It provides consumers with more information about the company itself and the actors that have starred in their films. The key purpose of the website is to not only provide information, but also promote the company as some audiences may be drawn to it as they may recognise some of the actors. The fact that it is online and can be easily accessed by so many people shows how technology has a massive influence in the way people watch films and get their information from.
