A Field In England

1) Write a 100 word summary of the Media Magazine article.

Effective distribution is important in contributing to the success of a film, as without this it will not reach audiences and revenue will not be generated. A Field In England's distribution method was much different to how films are traditionally released as it was released on all platforms on the same day, which generated media interest and debate about the future of the current Hollywood model.

2) Read the following pages on the official website for A Field In England and write a one-sentence summary of each. Each page provides explanations of the unique release strategy that the institutions behind the film chose:

Industrial Evolution: Producer Andy Starke on the music industry influences informing A Field In England’s release strategy. - A Field In England’s simultaneous release is about trying to do something in a completely different way

Screening/radical release: Commissioning Executive Anna Higgs on the groundbreaking release plans for A Field In England. -' the strategy that we developed is really bold...Every film is a different thing, and every film will therefore have a different optimum path to its audience.'

Audience: Anna Higgs discusses where A Field In England sits within British cinema and how it will reach its intended audience for the film. - it was released on each platform simultaneously.

3) How was A Field In England’s release different to typical film releases?
It launched on all platforms simultaneously rather than releasing on each platform individually at different stages the way a typical film would.

4) What are the advantages to releasing the film across all platforms on the same day?
It attracts attention to the film as it is something unusual and unconventional compared to the way a typical film is released.

5) What are the disadvantages to this approach?
There's a risk that less people will go to the cinema and pay a premium price to watch the film, and people will watch it for free at home instead, resulting in a less revenue being generated.

6) What target audience would A Field In England be aimed at? Think about demographics and Psychographics.
It would most likely be aimed at an abc1 demographic as arthouse cinema viewers are typically upper/middle class. The target audience would also most likely be at people who are passionate or have a strong interest in the civil war and the era of that particular event as arthouse films are designed for a niche audience.

7) Do you think all films in future will be released across all platforms simultaneously in future? Why? What role will technology play in film distribution?

i think it is a possibility as other films may try this method due to the success that a field in england had because of it, however i have doubts that all films will follow in these footsteps as many people in the industry prefer to keep things the same and dislike change.

8) Why was Chicken unable to use such a release and distribution strategy when it was made in 2014?

Because Chicken struggled to find someone who would distribute the film and they had a much lower budget so they relied on being recognised through film festivals and reviews.
