BBFC Film Regulation

1) Research the BBFC in more detail: what is the institution responsible for? How is it funded? What link does it have to government?

It is responsible for classifying media products such as film and TV and sometimes even video games. It gets funded by its charge from its services. No other funding comes from other companies, the government or any subsidiaries. The governments department for media and sport uses these classifications as the guideline provided for the people by the government. Their PEGI system was approves by the government, for video games a law system was put in place like classifications for films.

2) Read this BBFC guide to how films are rated. Summarise the process in 50 words.

By a consensus, with the Chief Executive, the President and the two Vice-Presidents. Time codes are kept where details of the plot, bad language and certain camera angles are. A film is split into four groups: bad language, taste, violence, sex and nudity. Watched in a cinema to as if audience was there.

3) Read this BBFC outline of the issues faced when classifying a film. Summarise the debate in 50 words.

The material is in conflict with the law or constitutes a criminal offence. If the film causes a harm to the age rating such as moral desensitisation, distorting right from wrong and limitation for compassion. The main things to consider when classifying a film is: Violence, Sex, Sexual Violence, Drugs, Horror, Imitable Behaviour, Discrimination, Language

4) Read this BBFC section on controversial decisions. Why did The Dark Knight generate a large amount of media coverage regarding its certificate? Do you agree with the 12A certificate The Dark Knight was awarded?

The movie had supposedly contained too much violence but I agree that is should be a 12A as there is no sex or language. This film I think is now supported for newer generations that are used to violence.

5) What are the guidelines for a 15 certificate?

There can be some sexual activity but no strong details. You can have some strong language but this doesn't include discriminatory language but racist/homophobia themes and language are allowed. Drugs can be shown but cannot be used and you can have strong violence.

6) The BBFC website offers an explanation of every classification it makes and detailed case studies on selected titles. Look at the rating for Chicken and explain why it was given a 15 certificate.
