TV: Capital, Marxism and Hegemony

1) Re-read the Mail Online review of Capital. Why does it suggest that Capital features a left-wing ideology?

because it highlights how the show goes against typical negative stereotypes such as immigrants - in Capital Quentina (an illegal immigrant) is presented as being hard working and is generally shown in a positive manner and the audience is positioned to sympathise with her.

2) Choose three quotes from the review that are particularly critical of Capital and paste them into your blogpost. Do you agree with the criticisms? Why?

'But that concept went nowhere' - talking about the postcards. i agree as this concept didnt really fit in/link to the main events in the series and didnt tie in with the storyline. the show could of still been created without this, it didnt contribute much to the series and this storyline was forgotten about through the majority of series besides the times where it was explicitly mentioned.

'Maybe that's one more thing to be added to the list of politically incorrect crimes' - Roger apologising too many times and the 'immigrant character snarled, with real anger: 'Ah! The Great British understatement!'' - i disagree as this was said in a more humorous tone than what the daily mail is trying to convey as Roger actually was trying to apologise, highlighting the fact that British people 'overuse' the word sorry and often say it when it doesnt need to be said or theres nothing to be sorry for.

"The hardest worker on the street was an illegal immigrant, determined to pay her way and not touch a penny of benefits." - agree as the statement is true, but disagree as it is said in a tone to be judgemental simply due to the fact that quentina was not a british citizen and is an illegal immigrant. it also suggests that all immigrants want is benefits and quentina was the only case that is different.

3) What scenes or characters from Capital could be read as promoting left-wing ideology?

Quentina, the immigrant but hard working. The Kamal family, working class and happy family even though not rich. Roger's family, upper class/rich shown to be ignorant and snobby.

4) What about the other side of the argument - are there any aspects of Capital that reinforce the status quo in capitalist London?

Every character in Capital is more or less hard-working which reinforces status quo of right wing capitalist ideology which contrasts to the Daily Mail view that Capital is left wing. The only person who challenges this hard working capitalist ideology is the man who is exploiting Quentina in the scene where she goes to cash out her money.

The Casual Vacancy Trailer:

1) Why did the Daily Mail suggest The Casual Vacancy promoted a left-wing ideology?

It shamed the wealthier individuals for their plot to sell off the local food bank and rehab centre Sweetlove House.

2) How does the article suggest characters, narrative and setting are used to promote a left-wing ideology?

certain characters like Barry Fairbrother show their disgust towards the place closing down and gives off his opinion through speeches, showing that they are used to promote a left wing ideology.

3) What research is quoted regarding BBC bias and what did it find? Do you think the BBC is biased?

The BBC Director of TV is also the director of J.K. Rowling's charity Lumos. It is also argues that the BBC executives and scriptwriters have a left wing bias and this is filtered through to their products. in my opinion the BBC hasnt been biased as they have been critical when necessary.
