Scene 1: Garden/BBQ scenes (East & West Germany)
4.58 – 8.20 and 34.00 – 37.20

Technical codes – particularly mise-en-scene
-colour is desaturated - gloomy in the East compared to in the West (at BBQ the colours are much more vibrant and bold)
-in the West they dress more modern, slightly more formal at the BBQ.
-recognisable brands - eg: Nescafe
-East includes popular music from the 80s, upbeat compared to in the West where it is more down toned and ominous
-camera circles around them speaking in the garden - creates feeling of being surrounded by enemies / sense of surveillance

Representation of East & West Germany / Family / Gender
-everyone is together socialising in the East, loud music, where as in the West the music is much quieter, still quite ominous despite being at a BBQ where you would expect the mood to be more relaxed. People are also in smaller groups.
-men speaking for women - brother says to his sister is having an 'identity crisis' and she replies 'am i?'. dad wants her to sing classical music but she prefers soul music.
-women portrayed as caring/maternal - wife stells stamm he has to stay and eat something
-male dominance - has to confirm this with husband first
-all the women there are there because of the presence of a man - annette is only introduced martins girlfriend, woman in the office is there to work for the general

Scene 2: Martin/Moritz first sees the West German supermarket

-music in supermarket - lyrics parallel to match situation, becomes more quiet and echoey / eerie - reflects mood and shows how martin feels out of place. also highlights differences between the east and west
-having an epiphany - stops in supermarket aisle - realising / seeing a completely different lifestyle

-tobias talks about how in the west nobody pays attention to eachother, idea of freedom due to living in a capitalist society
-tobias telling martin he can have a house and a car but he doesnt want that - just wants to go home. asks what annette wants - implies that women are materialistic by saying annette would want the car and house - negative representation of women

Scene 3: Training montage scene when Martin/Moritz learns how to be a spy

-view is through the window/blinds to the office, feels like were spying on the spy/spying with martin - reflects what is actually happening - audience positioned to empathise/put themselves in martins shoes - idea of constant surveillance
-close ups of his face when he hears voices - suspense and tension, can see him sweating - idea of pressure
-tracking shots - we move as he does, feel as if we are part of the action, making us imagine what it would be like if we (the audience) was martin

Audience pleasures
-breathing gets louder and heavier, shows hes in a rush, creates pace and suspense
-draw gets stuck, as he tries to shut it voices approaching the door get louder, creating suspense and tension - audience doesnt want him to get caught
-filmed from top left corner looking down at martin taking pictures of the documents - feels like a camera watching him - surveillance
-fast pace editing, lots of cuts - making it seem like he's under tight time constraint
-extreme close up when picking the lock/files - only reveals parts of the plans so the rest is still a secret, information that can be scene intrigues audience even more, sound becomes more exaggerated
